I went to New Orleans for a weekend to visit my sister. It wasn't mardi gras or anything, and bourbon street was pretty tame. The shirt was an epic hit.
I started walking up bourbon street alone and flicked it on to MAX. It started bouncing a little, but I couldn't really see it because I had to look where I was going. The reaction was immediate. Drunk guys coming up to me "dude, where did you buy that?" Girls pointing and waving at me, the balcony people yelling to me. Even the cops stopped me and asked where I got it. I was getting kinda freaked out, so I ducked into a bar and I was an instant hit. Girls would walk up and feel my chest while holding onto Mr Tattooed tank top boyfriend with their other hand. Less than five minutes a girl had offered to swap shirts with me...while standing next to her guy the size of a refrigerator. I move on to another bar and it is the same thing. The shooter girls pout when I won't buy and then start petting me. The DJ calls me out. Next bar, same thing. More offers to swap shirts. The bars are so loud that I can't hear myself think, and can't seem to communicate "handhelditems.com" to the endless questions of where did I get the shirt.
Note: be sure to turn it off before you use the urinal. 'Nuff said.

It's an extremely cute concept, a VU meter on a shirt. It runs on 4 AAAs (not included), and the controller sits in a little pocket on the bottom left. You can unplug it from the cable for washing. The cable contains 7 wires, and if you happen to plug it in backwards (it's not keyed) it'll still sort of work, only the display will be sort of upside-down.
It is not at all a graphic equalizer, as it may appear; just a simple volume-level meter, probably with 6 possible different values displayed. They have a canned image (such as the one at right) for each of the (probably 6) different levels.
It's kind of nice that the controller switch has two settings: MIN for use in loud environments (such as concerts I'm guessing), and MAX for use in regular day-to-day (at home?) environments. Another nice feature (that most people probably won't use) is that the controller has a power jack so you could if you wanted, plug in an AC adapter or something. I'm planning to use it to plug in a battery pack for bigger batteries (C or D). When the shirt arrived (very quickly, I might add), I just pulled some batteries out of other devices and used them. They didn't last very long... but I don't know whether that's because the shirt draws a lot of current or because the batteries were already mostly drained when I started.
All in all, it's not the awesome that I was hoping for (a true EQ) but it's absolutely what it claimed to be (a working VU meter).
Now, whatever building I wear this shirt in, I'll be in "a room with a VU".
